Welcome to Graduate Studies in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering

Our graduate program provides world-class multidisciplinary research opportunities, engaging professional development activities, and a robust education in chemical, biological, and biomedical engineering.

Graduate researchers and their faculty mentors work on research projects that address critical societal challenges in a broad array of fields, including sustainable energy, generation and storage, precision diagnostics, disease therapeutics, water purification, data science, and molecular dynamics and simulations.

Through these efforts and individualized mentoring plans, graduate researchers develop the skills that propel them to go on to become leaders in industry, academia, and government laboratories.

As a student in our Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, you’ll have many opportunities for collaboration across these areas. Our carefully structured program assures that a large majority of students complete their Ph.D. in five years.

Our department is home to more than 100 graduate students and 23 faculty members. We recognize that each student possesses unique strengths, scholarly interests, and aspirations. Flexible advanced coursework allows you to pursue topics closely aligned with your research interests and career aspirations. Working closely with your faculty mentors, you’ll develop an academic program tailored to your individual goals.

Professional opportunities include technical presentations at conferences, publishing of scholarly research articles, and teaching and grant writing workshops. Graduate student accomplishments are recognized and celebrated at an annual seminar dedicated to outstanding research accomplishments.

The Chemical and Biomolecular Graduate Student Organization (CBEGSO), operated by student leaders from the department, holds an annual graduate student symposium that provides exceptional networking opportunities and allows students to showcase their research to the community. CBEGSO also organizes graduate student events that, along with activities through Graduate Student Life create a vibrant intellectual and social community for graduate students at Notre Dame.

The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering is committed to building a community in which all can flourish. Our commitment to inclusion is rooted in the dignity and worth of every human person. It is also informed by the fact that diverse communities are better able to innovate, communicate, and address challenging issues. Together, we continue to build an inclusive culture that encourages, supports and celebrates the members of our community as we train a diverse cohort of scholars and future leaders.

We welcome applications from highly motivated students prepared to be trained as independent, creative, and accomplished researchers
